James Franco Is Not Okay With “Spring Breakers 2”

It was recently announced that there will be a sequel to last year’s Spring Breakers.  Little is known about the project so far, but we do know that the original spring breaker, James Franco, is not happy about it.  Franco took to Instagram (because where else would he go?!) to express his disapproval of the new film in very long caption form.  Read more to find out what he said!

Along with the photo above, Franco posted this not-so-sweet little message of his thoughts on the upcoming sequel.

STATEMENT ABOUT SPRING BREAKERS 2: This is not being done with Harmony Korine or my consent. The original was wholly Harmony’s creation and these producers are capitalizing on that innovative film to make money on a weak sequel. I want everyone to know that whoever is involved in the sequel is jumping on board a poison ship. It will be a terrible film, with a horrible reason d’être: to make money off someone else’s creativity. Can you imagine someone making the sequel to “Taxi Driver” without Scorcese and DeNiro’s consents? Insanity! I’m speaking up for Harmony and his original vision and for any creative person who cares about preserving artistic integrity.”

The sequel, Spring Breakers: The Second Coming, will apparently be about a new group of spring breakers who battle a Christian sect that attempts to convert them.  The production company Wild Bunch said that the film is “not a direct sequel, although there are allusions to some of the characters in the original.”

Regardless of his feelings about it, I think it’s safe to say that Franco won’t be reprising his role as Alien given that, *spoiler alert*, he was shot dead at the end of the first film.

Personally, I have several thoughts about all of this…first, I’m not totally on board with the plot for the sequel.  When you bring religion into the mix, I think you walk a very thin (and controversial) line. Second, Franco may be kind of insane at times (yet still hot), but he has a point.  How often is the sequel better than the original?  Also, I didn’t really like the first Spring Breakers so I doubt I’ll see this one.

Unless Selena Gomez is in it again.  I’ll follow her career anywhere!

What do you think?  Are you stoked for this film or is one Spring Breakers enough?
