This is super cool. American Horror Story actress Jamie Brewer will become the first woman with Down syndrome to walk the runway at New York Fashion Week. Her debut on the runway is part of Carrie Hammer’s “Role Models Not Runway Models” campaign, which the designer started when she was asked to show her line at Fashion Week a year ago.
Hammer wanted to represent the women who bought her designs, so she decided to feature her clients at shows. At her first show, her wheelchair-bound friend Danielle Sheypuk was a model.
Many ladies reached out to thank Hammer, who was especially touched by an email from Katie Driscoll, the co-founder of the nonprofit Changing the Face of Beauty. She wrote in her email,
Thank you for being the change that is long overdue. I could literally cry every time I read an article talking about your decision to include a model who just happens to have a disability! YOU are what this world needed!”
After the campaign took off, Hammer was overwhelmed with model nominations, including one from Karen Crespo. Crespo lost her limbs to bacterial meningitis and appeared in Hammer’s fall Fashion Week show.
Driscoll is the one who recommended actress Jamie Brewer to walk. Driscoll’s daughter Grace has Down syndrome, so she thought that Brewer would be a good role model for Grace in Hammer’s show.
Aside from starring in three seasons of FX’s hit show American Horror Story (Murder House, Coven, & most recently, Freak Show), Brewer is also an advocate for people with intellectual disabilities. She has worked on several boards, including the Governmental Affairs Committee for the State of Texas, where she was the only member with a disability.
Brewer does not take her influence as a role model lightly.
Young girls and even young women…[see me] and say ‘hey, if she can do it so can I.’ It’s a true inspiration being a role model for any young women to [encourage them] in being who they are and showing who they are.”
Hammer designed a special dress for Brewer that will play on her roles in the American Horror Story franchise.
‘American Horror Story’ is dark, scary, bewitching so we had to go with black and Jamie has a beautiful body with a teeny waist and curves and we went with an A-line.”
As for Brewer, she’s looking forward to her runway debut in a custom-made dress.
It’s amazing, it’s really neat. Many women have many sides to their personality, this dress fits…mine. I am honored to be in it.”
What do you think about this amazing idea? Personally, I love Jamie’s work on AHS so I’m really proud of her for getting this opportunity. I’m just so inspired by this story! Leave a comment if you have a thought. :)
